How meeting these needs affects motivation and engagement:

Students experience positive social interactions and feel safe with their teachers and peers which fosters motivation and engagement.  When students' needs are fully met, this can develop a strong relationship with their peers and their teachers.

When not meeting these needs affects motivation and engagement:

Students may have anxiety or a fear of failing which often leads to frustration and failure avoidance. This can also develop a negative response to their teachers and peers and refuse to participate in activities.
